Episode 205 - STROKE

Today on RÚV English Radio, we preview an extraordinary piece of theatre, in Reykjavík and in English, this weekend.

When Virginia Gillard woke up from a stroke six years ago, to her mind, the world looked like a scene from a clown show.

Aphasia, a language disorder caused by damage to the brain that controls language expression and comprehension, caused by the stroke, made her a prisoner in her own body, and the most everyday actions became a challenge. The experience has proved difficult for her to explain.

Before the stroke, however, Virginia worked for years as a professional clown in hospitals in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

In Stroke, Virginia uses her clown persona, Cookie, to share her experience and tell her story.

Stroke is being performed again this Sunday at Tjarnarbíó in the heart of Reykjavík, in English. It is co-performed and stage managed by Virginia's husband, Sæmundur Andrésson.
