Today, RÚV English Radio is at Skriðuklaustur, in East Iceland.
In 1939 the Icelandic writer Gunnar Gunnarsson had a mansion built as his family home on the farm Skriðuklaustur. The house was built as he returned to Iceland after achieving fame during his 30 years in Denmark.
The building of the house was an enormous project at the time and the cost of the building was similar to ten houses being built in Reykjavík.
Gunnar and his wife Franzisca lived at Skriðuklaustur for nine years, until 1948, when they moved to Reykjavík and gave the mansion and all of the farm to the Icelandic nation "to be forever owned by the Icelandic people". In 2000, the Gunnar Gunnarsson Institute opened a museum and cultural centre at the mansion.
