Final leaders’ debate: the hard questions
Last night saw the second and final live debate between the leaders of all ten parties in the running nationwide in today’s Alþingi election. The two-hour debate covered a lot of ground and was heated at times. Here, we cover highlights from the start and the end of the debate.

Covid umbrella protects voter secrecy
Iceland goes to the polls tomorrow, Saturday, and early voting has been underway since August. Voters in COVID-19 isolation or quarantine are able to vote from inside their cars. A large group outbreak in the eastern town of Reyðarfjörður meant an extra drive-through polling station was set up at short notice. Voter secrecy is assured...thanks to an umbrella that has had a sheet tied to it with string.

People are more excited for this election than the last
The latest Gallup Pulse of the Nation poll reveals that a significant majority of people in Iceland would rather vote for individual candidates than party lists (63 percent versus 37 percent), and also that people are generally more excited by tomorrow’s election than they were four years ago when the nation last voted for members of Alþingi.

Politicians are sometimes known for their colourful answers to simple questions. It can sometimes be hard to force them to commit to a solid yes or no answer. For that reason, comedian and self-confessed politics nerd Jakob Birgisson handed political leaders paddles marked ‘yes’ and ‘no’, and then clicked the mute button.

Pandemic solutions for Alþingi election
Iceland goes to the polls this Saturday, but more voters than ever have already cast their ballots in early voting. Additionally, people in COVID-19 quarantine or isolation will be able to vote from their cars or even their homes, under special new temporary election laws that aim to maintain privacy and security—albeit in a low-tech way. Electronic voting is not allowed.

Viðreisn (the Reform Party) and Framsóknarflokkurinn (the Progressive Party) have both gained support in the latest MMR poll for Morgunblaðið, while Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn (the Independence Party) lost some support.

Flokkur fólksins (the People’s Party) has changed its list of candidates in the north-western voting district. The list was changed when it came to light that Ágúst Heiðar Ólafsson, who was second on the list, also appeared on the candidate list for Frjálslyndi lýðræðisflokkurinn (the Liberal Democracy Party) in the northeast.

Large proportion of workers have no political voice
An immigration affairs expert says immigration is a marginalised issue in Icelandic politics and that immigrants are largely ignored in the election. She says the time has come to examine changing the rules to make it easier for immigrants to earn the right to vote, because they make up a large and important part of Icelandic society.

Close to five thousand people have already cast their ballots in early voting for the 25th September Alþingi election. This is three thousand more people than at this stage four years ago. Voting solutions for people who will be in isolation or quarantine on polling day are still being worked on.

“The decreasing rate of voter turnout is almost entirely driven by the younger generations. The older generations are just as likely to vote as before,” says political psychologist Hulda Þórisdóttir. She says young people are less politically partisan, and that they are also more right-wing on economic matters than older people.

Leaders’ debate: the economy
One of the issues covered in last night’s election debate on RÚV was economic recovery after covid. Unsurprisingly, the party leaders were not always in agreement—though the three coalition party leaders all claimed the political reaction to the pandemic have worked well and that there is no need for spending cuts and tax rises—which the leader of Píratar described as “income improvement measures”.

The first election debate between the leaders of parties vying for election to Alþingi on 25th September was broadcast live on RÚV yesterday evening. All ten parties that have so far been issued an electoral letter and that have published at least one district candidate list were present.

The current government would not be able to continue after the 25th September election, according to the latest Gallup ‘pulse of the nation’ poll, released today. The three coalition parties would receive a combined total of 31 MPs—one short of a majority—the poll predicts.
