Three large snow avalanches fell in the Westfjords around midnight. Two avalanches fell on Flateyri and one in Súgandafjörður. Rescue teams have been sent to the rescue. An emergency phase has been declared in Flateyri and Suðureyri due to the avalanches. People in Flateyri and Súgandafjörður are asked to stay at home until further notice.

It seems that avalanche protection above Flateyri protected most of the inhabited area. However a flood hit at least a part of one house there. No serious injuries have been reported, but a teenage girl was dug out after one of the avalanches in Flateyri. She was not seriously injured.

One of them hit the harbour at Flateyri, several boats were cut from the harbour, that appears to be damaged.

The Icelandic Coast Guard is sending their vessel Þór to Flateyri with 35 rescue team members on board. A helicopter will also be sent there if it will be able to land due in the bad weather.

The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management has activated the coordination centre at Skógarhlíð in Reykjavik.
