The men’s football teams of Víkingur Reykjavík and ÍA from Akranes will face off tomorrow in the Mjólkurbikarinn Icelandic cup final. If Víkingur win, they will join a very exclusive group of doubles winners: clubs to win both the league and the cup in the same year.

It will not be easy, however, as their opponents at Laugardalsvöllur tomorrow, ÍA, have already achieved the feat, more often than anyone else; in 1983, 1984, 1993, and 1996.

The first team to ever secure the double in Iceland was KR, also doing so four times to date, in 1961, 1963, 1999, and 2011 (making them both the first and also the most recent to do so).

Valur managed the feat in 1976, and ÍBV did so in 1998. Víkingur could become the fifth tomorrow, after recently securing the league title after a thrilling, close summer of matches in the Pepsi Max League.

ÍA finished ninth in the 12-team league, but ended on a high, escaping relegation with three victories on the trot at the end of the season. There is therefore no doubt they can win tomorrow—and not least thanks to the added incentive of a place in Europe that victory would bring.

The Mjólkurbikarinn final between ÍA and Víkingur starts at 15.00 tomorrow and ticket sales have reportedly been strong. The game will be shown live on Stöð 2 Sport.
