The Icelandic coastguard monitored the movements of three Russian ships inside the Icelandic Exclusive Economic Zone, though not within territorial waters, for several days earlier this month, it has been revealed.
Þór, the coastguard’s flagship vessel, tracked one of the boats on radar off North Iceland, while coastguard helicopters twice flew out from East Iceland to track the other two.
According to a statement from the coastguard, all three ships are Russian military vessels. One is an oil tanker, while details on the other two have not been confirmed.
The coastguard statement says that Icelandic fishing crews had shown the three ships interest and reported their locations to the coastguard.
