Seven people are now in custody in connection to the murder of a young man on Rauðagerði in Reykjavík this weekend. Three men were remanded in custody last night and one woman was released. A number of new details about the case have now emerged; including that the murderer was waiting outside the victim’s house and shot him when he returned home.

Shot several times with a handgun

One Icelander is in custody and the other six are all foreign citizens, including from Lithuania and Albania. All are suspected of playing a role in the murder.

The victim, 33-year-old Armando Beqirai, was shot several times, including in the neck, outside his home on Rauðagerði, Reykjavík, just before midnight on Saturday. He was returning home and it is believed the murderer was waiting for him there. His pregnant wife and young child were inside their home when the murder took place.

House searches around Iceland

The police believe the shooter is among the seven in custody but refuse to give details on how the other suspects are thoguht to be linked to the crime.

Between 10 and 20 properties have been searched, including in the capital, South Iceland, and North Iceland. Evidence, including small items and a motor vehicle, has been confiscated.

The case is reportedly one of the biggest and most complicated in recent years and officers are working to establish links between all involved, what the motive for the killing was, and whether the murder was planned, or even carried out on the orders of others. The investigation is progressing reasonably well, a police source says.
