Landslide and rain alerts continue in East Iceland
The East Iceland police chief has told RÚV residents will most likely not be allowed to start work to clean up their properties today, as the rain is still coming down hard and is predicted to continue doing so.
“We do not expect, at least for now, that residents can go to their houses or inside them, as was permitted yesterday morning. The conditions were different then to today. It has rained a great deal; started to rain yesterday afternoon, rained through the night and is expected to continue today. The conditions have simply changed,” police chief Kristján Ólafur Guðnason says.
A small mudslide occurred yesterday evening, but the night was otherwise quiet. The civil protection agency continues to monitor closely, as well as in Eskifjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, and Neskaupsstaður. Residents near Grjótá and Lambeyrará rivers in Eskifjörður are receiving special updates. “People have been asked to be careful and pay close attention. Otherwise, all is calm there.”
Kristján says daylight will reveal whether any clean-up operations will be possible in Seyðisfjörður today.
