There is a large emergency services presence in Þorlákshöfn, southwest Iceland, today after local police, national police special forces, and a coastguard bomb disposal team were dispatched to the town this morning to deal with a suspicious item at the town’s waste disposal facility. It is suspected to be a bomb.

Þorsteinn M. Kristinsson, a police officer on the scene today, says an exclusion zone has been set up to ensure nobody is nearby while police and bomb disposal experts are working.

“It is a suspicious item. We are not sure yet what it is, but it needs attending to. That’s why we are here,” Þorsteinn says.

Local online media source Hafnarfréttir first reported on the story this morning, noting the emergency services response at the waste disposal facility, and that roads in the area had been closed.

Þorsteinn tells RÚV that a fairly large area around the facility is off limits. He says it is believed somebody may have thrown the item away, and it was then discovered by plant staff by coincidence.
