A woman in her sixties died after a fire ignited in a home in Hafnarfjörður last night. The fire brigade received word of the fire just before 02.00 this morning.
Fire fighters were informed there was a woman inside the property as soon as they arrived at the scene. Smoke divers went inside and quickly located and removed the woman. She was declared dead at the scene.
According to a statement from the capital region fire brigade, the fire was soon brought under control, though smoke did affect other neighbouring homes.
Residents received Red Cross assistance in the form of accommodation and trauma counselling.
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage. Police are in charge of that investigation.
