The volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula was at its most captivating yesterday when the lava flow changed and started flowing into Syðri-Geldingadalir and onwards into Nátthagi. A powerful lava river formed, transporting glowing lava down into the meadow. Christopher Hamilton captured some of the show in pictures with the help of a drone.

Despite the significant flow of redirected lava, experts do not expect the valley to fill up in the coming days. It will still likely take several more weeks for the lava to overwhelm Suðurstrandarvegur road.

The afternoon show stopped fairly abruptly around 16.00 yesterday, as the volcano entered one of its now-familiar quiet periods, Met Office natural hazards specialist Lovísa Mjöll Guðmundsdóttir confirmed.

The level of volcanic activity remains low at the time of writing, but appears to be growing again slowly. The volcano has been most active in the afternoon during recent days, Lovísa says.
