Close to 4,000 people graduated from the University of Iceland (HÍ), Reykjavík University (HR), and Bifröst University on Saturday—roughly equivalent to one percent of the nation. HÍ and HR both graduated a record number of students this semester.

688 graduated from HR, with the most coming from the university’s engineering school. Rector Ari Kristinn Jónsson said at the graduation ceremony that education, knowledge, and innovation are the key to creating the most value without squandering shared resources. He said that Iceland has enormous opportunities to create a better society based on equality, fairness, welfare, and health.

A further nearly 2,500 graduated from HÍ. The rector of that university spoke about the pandemic and said that persistence and stamina have been central in a situation when most foundations changed suddenly. Students nevertheless succeeded in their studies and gained unprecedented experience and lessons that will be useful in the future, no less than their degrees and other qualifications.
