The Icelandic men's national handball team will play Lithuania this afternoon in their penultimate qualifying match for the European championship next January. Icelandic victory or a draw today would secure a place in the tournament.

The match this afternoon takes place in Vilnius and Iceland will be guaranteed a spot next January in Hungary and Slovakia if they win or draw. The game starts at 16.00, live on RÚV. The programme starts at 15.30.

Iceland beat Israel on Tuesday by 30 goals to 20, and won the first match against Lithuania in Reykjavík in November by 36 goals to 20.

Before today's games, the group sees Iceland on top with six points from four games (g.d. +33), Portugal second on the same number of points (g.d. +10), Israel third with two points (g.d. -16), and Lithuania bottom, also with two points (g.d. -27).

The top two teams advance to the main tournament, as well as the four best third-place teams from across Europe. A draw today is therefore enough for Iceland to advance. If Lithuania win, the Icelanders will have another chance to advance in their final match against Israel in Hafnarfjörður this Sunday.

Icelandic victory both today and on Sunday would secure top spot in the group and mean a more privileged start to the main tournament.
