My Native Language is Útlenska
On Julius Pollux's first day working at an after-school club - barely a week after moving to Iceland - he was approached by a blonde-haired child. The child asked, wide-eyed, “Are you an útlendingur?“ (a foreigner), and then, “Do you speak útlenska?“
This question about origin, and the binary nature of simply "here" or "not here", became Julius's influence for a musical project called Vestur í bláinn, which is built around the voices of immigrants. In “My Native Language is Útlenska“, Julius and his interviewees explore the role of native language in notions of self and of community.
Presenters: Anna Marsibil Clausen and Julius Pollux.
