Coalition announced on Vestmannaeyjar
Eyjalistinn and Fyrir Heimaey have agreed to continue in coalition on Vestmannaeyjar after maintaining their council majority at Saturday's election. Íris Róbertsdóttir will continue as mayor. Njáll Ragnarsson will be chair of the council, and Páll Magnússon will take on the role of council leader.

Votes in Húnaþing vestra, northwest Iceland, were recounted last night on the request of representatives from N-listinn Nýtt afl, because the fight for the council's seventh and final seat came down to just two votes.

Voter turnout was down almost everywhere
Voter turnout was lower this weekend than at the last local election in 2018 in all the biggest municipalities in Iceland—apart from Hafnarfjörður, where participation was 2.4 percent higher. Turnout was lowest in Reykjanesbær, where fewer than half of eligible voters used their democratic right. Turnout there was almost ten percent lower than four years ago.

Reykjavík coalition attempts to carry on
Saturday’s election saw the Samfylkingin (Social Democrat), Píratar (Pirates), Viðreisn (Reform Party), and Vinstri grænir (Left Greens) coalition lose their majority in the City of Reykjavík. Three of the four parties are today negotiating together to potentially find partners to form a majority for the next four years. Vinstri grænir will not seek to include their one councillor in a ruling majority this term, the party confirmed yesterday.

Local election results
After an exciting election night during which many local counts took longer than usual (including Reykjavík, which declared its first set of numbers at 01.30 this morning), the dust is now settling. Across the country as a whole, the biggest winners were Framsóknarflokkurinn (the Progressive Party), and the biggest losers Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn (the Independence Party). While many majorities held, the coalition in Reykjavík fell, and the outlook is for complicated negotiations to come.
