Glacial Land

kynningarstill fyrir heimildarmyndina jöklaland

The retreat of glaciers is one of the most obvious sign of climate change
Europe’s largest glacier, situated in Iceland, is the main focus of this film as scientists examine the ice caps, glaciers sands as well as the impact of global climate change on earth glaciers, rising sea levels and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The glaciers in Iceland are the most easily accessible in the world. Glacial research in Iceland by scientists and common people alike is amongst the oldest in the world.

Among the locations visited is Jökulsárlón (The Glacial Lagoon) at the Southern end of Vatnajökull, Europe´s largest ice cap. This majestic lagoon only logarstarted emerging about 85 years ago today, becoming 25 km2 in size and the deepest lake in the country. Sand dunes with small brooks and ponds appear with the retrieval of the glacier, with new ecosystems developing. The “new” land gives scientists an amazing opportunity to investigate the life emerging in this seemingly harsh environment.

Iceland’s largest volcanic systems lie under the thick ice cap of Vatnajökull carefully monitored by the scientists by flying over the glacier and by expeditions across it.
