Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, President of the Republic of Iceland, spent yesterday morning cleaning up litter around the estate of his official residence, Bessastaðir.

Guðni wrote on his Facebook page that he is unhappy with the amount of rubbish to be found around Bessastaðir and says it is a shame that some people simply cannot be bothered to clean up after themselves due to laziness.

“Some of it blows here or washes up on the shore with weather and wind. The rest people just seem to throw out of their cars or can’t be bothered to take home with them after walking.”

He calls on people to change: “Let’s try to do better! You, out there: it should not be my job, or anybody else’s, to clean up after you; not now and not in the future!”
