A volcanic eruption started under the Eyjafjalla glacier last night. The eruption now is much more powerful than the one that started in Fimmvörðuháls last month. The fissure is around two kilometers long.
Massive flooding has started down Markarfljótsaura and down the heaths above the farm Thorvaldseyri under Eyjafjöll-mountains. Roads and bridges are considered to be in danger because of the flooding, among them the new bridge over Markarfljót-river. An attempt has been made to breach route one to try and save bridges in the area.
Around seven hundred inhabitants in Fljótshlíð, Landeyjum and under the Eyjafjöll-mountains had to evacuate their homes last night due to the eruption.
No air traffic is allowed in a large area above and around the eruption site. As a result there are no flights to Egilsstaðir or Hornafjörður. The no flight zone could reach Norway and even Russia later today.
