Venezuelans make up half the number of applicants for international protection in Iceland so far this year—second only to Ukrainians, who make up a larger number of applicants than all other nationalities combined. Over 430 Venezuelans have received protection in Iceland this year.

The number of Venezuelan applicants is more than 200 higher than last year.

588 citizens of Venezuela have come to Iceland this year, which the most ever. Four years ago, the number was just 15. Last year, 364 people came from Venezuela and there were 388 Venezuelans resident in Iceland.

A total of 1,700 Ukrainians have applied for international protection in Iceland so far this year, in addition to 1,175 people from other countries—nearly half of whom come from Venezuela.

Venezuelans amount to 70 percent of non-Ukrainians granted protection, enhanced protection, or humanitarian residence permits in the first eight months of the year—a total of 431. The size of that group increased sharply this summer after the immigration appeals committee reversed a Directorate of Immigration decision to reject international protection for people leaving Venezuela.

Venezuelans are fleeing the political situation in their home country, as well as the poor state of human rights and economic development. The United Nations estimates that 6.8 million people have left Venezuela since 2015.
