Northeast Iceland police are applying for extended custody for three of the four people arrested in Ólafsfjörður this morning, in connection to the case of man stabbed to death in the town.

The man in his forties was a guest in the house when he was stabbed, the assistant chief of northeast Iceland police, Arnfríður Gígja Arngrímsdóttir, confirmed. Resuscitation attempts failed and the man was declared dead at the scene. Police arrested four people this morning.

Arnfríður says the police have a fairly clear picture of what happened, though the investigation is in its early stages and the timeline of events will become clearer still.

Residents of Ólafsfjörður are in shock and the Red Cross is offering counselling. There is a service of reflection and mutual support at the local church at 20.00 this evening.

The Fjallabyggð municipality’s website says the community is traumatised: “In a small community it is nearly impossible to be unaffected when events like this occur. It is important to take care of yourself and your loved ones.”

The statement adds that the Red Cross helpline, 1717, is open round the clock.
