148 fin whales were hunted during this year's hunt, which ended yesterday, 100 days after it began.

Both Hvalur hf. whaling boats have returned to dock in Reykjavík, Morgunblaðið reports.

The paper quotes Hvalur hf. CEO Kristján Loftsson as saying that September was particularly good for his hunters, as there were lots of whales, they were close to land, and the weather was good.

Hunting was particularly good off the south and southwest of the country, and the majority of the season's whales were hunted in September. This is unusual, as the return of longer nights and poorer weather usually make September less successful, Kristján explained.

The final whale was landed in Hvalfjörður yesterday morning. The company's current licence also extends to next summer, and Kristján says he sees nothing standing in the way of conducting a hunt next summer as well.
