Ómar Ragnarsson has today been awarded the Sigríður í Brattholti nature conservation award. Today is Icelandic Nature Day. The recognition was awarded Ómar by the Minister of the Environment, Energy, and Climate, Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson.

Guðlaugur Þór Guðlaugur Þór said Ómar has brought the Icelandic people one natural wonder after another, right into their living rooms, partly through his ‘Stiklur’ television series, and other nature documentaries.

Ómar has also been a vocal proponent of electric vehicles in recent years—including by riding an eBike from Reykjavík to Akureyri in 2015, at the age of 75.

“Icelandic nature would be so much the poorer if it weren’t for firebrands who are willing to put themselves on the line for it. I, like many Icelanders, am lucky to have had Ómar as a window into things that are so important yet which few were looking at. Individuals make a difference, and a clear example of that is Ómar Ragnarsson,” the minister said in his speech.

Ómar’s contributions to Icelandic nature conservation are immeasurable and successive generations have been introduced to the country’s wonders thanks to the passion and drive of Ómar Ragnarsson.
