Children under 12 years of age will not be allowed to walk to the Meradalir eruption site when it opens again, the local police announced today after a coordination meeting with the Icelandic Civil Protection agency and other stakeholders. The area has been closed since Sunday morning due to adverse weather, and will remain closed until further notice, police said this morning.

Despite the closure, numerous people defied the ban yesterday, ignoring advice from rescue squad members posted on the walking trails leading to the eruption. Later afternoon, rescue squads were called out to search for about 10 people who were lost near the trails. Responding to this, police deputies have been posted there since late last night.

„When the area will be opened, we will restrict access to persons over 12 years of age,“ says Police Chief Ulvar Ludviksson. „This has posed problems for responders and therefore, I have made this decision.“
