One of the first to see the eruption in Meradalir last Wednesday was a French amateur volcanologist. He has been present at 60 volcanic eruptions on the French Reunion Island. He praises the Icelandic government’s resolute response to the eruption and allowing the public to enjoy it.

Just before half past two o’clock on Wednesday, August 3, Alain Bertil took pictures of the eruption in Meradalir, only a few minutes after it started.
“I started to feel a smell that reminded me right away of volcanic eruptions on Réunion. I immediately realised that something had happened. I was at a bend of the hiking route and saw a red point appearing. Instantly, a crack opened and stretched along the valley. I was lucky enough to witness the absolute beginning of the eruption, which is unbelievable," - he says.
Alain is visiting Iceland on behalf of the city of Sainte-Rose on Réunion Island. A partnership centring around tourism and culture is to be established based on the shared experience of the two volcanic islands. Alain is one of the most influential experts on the volcanoes on Réunion. He has been present at about sixty volcanic eruptions of Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It erupted nearly 150 times since the XVII century.
He says the eruption in Meradalir is not unlike the ones he has experienced, but the big difference is how civil protection and police respond to it here.
“Reunion advertises itself as a destination where volcanic eruptions are a natural occurrence. In most advertisements for the island, we show our volcanoes, but when it comes to the eruption, we shut down the area for the public, and the people cannot get anywhere near it. I feel that we would gain a lot following the example of Iceland. The authorities here have confidence in the people's maturity to participate in volcanic eruptions," says Alain.
