Portugal and Hungary played in the day’s first game yesterday, with Hungary winning by a single goal, which meant Icelandic victory would not be enough to advance straight to the next round and setting up for a thrilling match against Hungary tomorrow. Although not safely through yet, the Icelanders do have the maximum four points from two games, while the Netherlands and Hungary have two, and Portugal no points.
It was captain Aron Pálmarsson who scored first for Iceland in both Friday’s 28-24 victory over Portugal and last night’s 29-28 nail-biter against the Netherlands.
Coverage of Hungary-Iceland starts at 16.30 tomorrow on RÚV.
Competition in the second round starts on the 20th January. The top two teams in each four-team group advance. Victory is still therefore important tomorrow, as three teams could still potentially finish with four points.
