The Síminn mobile phone network almost completely shut down just before midday, during which it was impossible to make phone calls. The half-hour disruption was caused by human error.
Guðmundur Jóhannsson, Síminn's press officer, says the human error occurred as a result of regular maintenance. "The outage was extensive, so it had an effect on the whole Síminn mobile network, so we're probably talking about around a hundred thousand customers. The outage happened simply because of human error in the normal operation of the system. It is good to note that it was not a cyber attack or anything like that. Just a human error during normal work on the mobile phone network, the likes of which takes place most days," Guðmundur says.
