Unemployment rocketed around the world as a result of the pandemic, and Iceland was no exception, where it peaked this January at 11.6 percent. The rate has dropped quickly since then, down to 7.4 percent in June, and the number of job vacancies today is rising.

According to the economics department at Landsbankinn, there were 183,000 jobs positions in Iceland early this year. The number of job vacancies has been almost unchanged since the end of 2019, when the number went down.

The number of vacant jobs has risen significantly this year, however—doubling between the first and second quarters.

The growing number of job opportunities differs by industry, but the growth has been fastest in the travel industry, accommodation and hospitality, and in the services sector. There has also been a sharp rise in infrastructure and construction.
