The government has a meeting today about the actions that Chief Epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason proposed to be taken within the country to contain the spread of the Corona Virus. There were 78 infections two day ago and in total 172 infections over the duration of three days this week.

At yesterday’s briefing Þórólfur didn’t want to go into the specifics of the proposals but did mention that they were not as severe as before due to the number of people who have already been vaccinated. It is expected that actions based on those proposals will be announced today.

Since last night, the National Hospital (Landspítali), is operating on ‘red alert’ due to the current circumstances. Sigríður Gunnarsdóttir, the acting CEO of the hospital, told our reporters yesterday that 240 employees are either in isolation or in quarantine, which may cause operational difficulties at the institution.

New infections have been detected widely within the community in the past few days. Event organizers for Verslunarmannahelgi (merchant’s weekend, the weekend preceding the first Monday in August) are awaiting news about what measures will be implemented, before they decide how they will respond to them. An event that was to be held in Flúðir has already been cancelled.

Yesterday an infection was detected at the football tournament Reycup held in Laugardalur. Two teams from two clubs withdrew from the tournament and the third team had already done so once the possibility of an infection was made clear. The teams are all from the capital area. Tournament organizers have said that the contestants from these teams have not been sleeping in Laugardalur and they haven’t been eating at the joint food halls.

There were approximately 4000 tests taken yesterday in the capital area and the number of yesterday’s infections will be announced today at eleven o'clock.
