A brush fire ignited at Búrfellsgjá in the Heiðmörk forest yesterday evening. A coastguard helicopter was called out to help extinguish the flames, as it was difficult to get fire engines close to the site

The helicopter visited Hvaleyrarvtn lake five times to fill a large tank that it then poured onto the fire.

According to Bjarni Ingimarsson, assistant capital region fire chief, the helicopter was a major help and operations at the scene were complete by 22.00.
