Three men were last night remanded in custody until 23rd February. The court approved the capital region police request in the interest of the ongoing investigation into this weekend’s fatal shooting on Rauðagerði in Reykjavík. One man is in his 40s and the other two in their 30s.

One of the men, reportedly an Icelandic citizen, denies any involvement in the case and has already appealed the custody decision to the Landsréttur appeals court, his lawyer confirms. The man is currently being held in isolation.

The three men were arrested as part of a widespread police operation involving special forces and more than one regional police force. There was a significant security presence at the District Court when the men were brought before the judge at 20.00 last night.

“There were house searches and following those, arrests were made. These were actions that took place here in the capital region and elsewhere,” says assistant capital region police chief Margeir Sveinsson.

The fourth man in custody, who was arrested at the weekend, will remain in custody until Friday – or longer if police successfully apply for an extension.

Various evidence has already been gathered in the case, but police are not releasing any further details at this time.
