The Icelandic men’s national handball team enjoyed a remarkable second half in Hafnarfjörður yesterday to beat Portugal in the countries’ second 2022 European championship qualifier within a week. The players head to the world championship in Egypt today on a high.

After losing the first European qualifier away in Portugal last week, the Icelanders turned the return leg into a victory yesterday evening. The half-time score stood at 12-13 in Portugal’s favour, but the score was 32-23 to Iceland by the end. Iceland is currently second in the qualification group with four points from three games, while Portugal is top, on six points from four games.

The teammates and coaching staff have today set off for Egypt, where the world championship starts on Wednesday. Iceland’s first match is at 19.30 on Thursday—coincidentally also against Portugal. Iceland will also face Algeria and Morocco. All the games will be live on RÚV.
