1,587 people have lost their lives in road traffic accidents in Iceland since the first fatality was recorded 105 years ago. All of them were commemorated this weekend in locations around the country on the UN’s World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

Commemorations were different this year due to anti-contagion measures, as seen in the above video.

Candles were lit outside the national disaster co-ordination centre at Skógarhlíð, and at search & rescue headquarters at Grandi, among other locations on Sunday.

Ceremonies from Siglufjörður, Vestmannaeyjar, and South Iceland were streamed online in the early evening.
