Large earthquake rocks much of western Iceland

An earthquake was very clearly felt in the capital region and on Suðurnes at 13.43 this afternoon.

Initial meaasurements from the Icelandic Met Office put the quake at magnitude 5.7, though such early reports are only 50.5 percent accurate and will be confirmed later.

The quake's epicentre was 6 km west of Kleifarvatn lake on the Reykjanes peninsula.

RÚV correspondents in Borgarnes and Ísafjörður felt the quake and  finance minister Bjarni Benediktsson tweeted that it was one of the biggest he has felt.

The Met Office website went down for a while, as did many of the country's main news websites, as people went online to find out more information.

There is no reported damage or injury.
