A COVID-19 infection has been identified within the State police civil protection department. Assistant chief Rögnvaldur Ólafsson (pictured) tested positive and has already been in isolation for several days, it has now been confirmed. The agency says it is operating as normal, thanks to strictly following its own rules.

A statement from the department says that Rögnvaldur is suffering with symptoms from the coronavirus, but that he is in good health given the circumstances. Three other staff members in his department were sent into precautionary quarantine after the infection was diagnosed.

The civil protection department follows anti-contagion rules and recommendations to the letter, as can be expected, and therefore Rögnvaldur's illness and the quarantining of three staff has not affected the department's overall operation, the statement concludes.
