The brand-new Icelandic television series Ráðherrann (The Minister) has been nominated for a PRIX EUROPA broadcast prize in the category of best scripted television programme.

The nominations were announced yesterday and the winners will be announced at a ceremony in Potsdam in October.

The series will première on RÚV on Sunday 20th September (including with English subtitles on RÚV 2 and ruv.is).

Ráðherrann focuses on the character of Benedikt Ríkarðsson, an unorthodox politician who takes the Icelandic political scene by storm thanks to his party’s unusual election campaign. Once in power, symptoms of serious mental health problems become increasingly apparent in his demeanour and behaviour.

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson plays the part of the minister, and other starring roles are taken by Aníta Briem, Þuríður Blær Jóhannsdóttir, and Þorvaldur Davíð Kristjánsson.

The series is directed by Nanna Kristín Magnúsdóttir and Arnór Pálmi Arnarson, while the script was written by Birkir Blær Ingólfsson, Björg Magnúsdóttir, and Jónas Margeir Ingólfsson. Filming was coordinated by Ásgrímur Guðbjartsson and the music is by Kjartan Holm. The producers are Anna Vigdís Gísladóttir, Hilmar Sigurðsson, and Kjartan Þór Þórðarson.

The series is made by Sagafilm, in cooperation with RÚV and Cineflix Rights, which is in charge of international distribution, as well as: DR, NRK, SVT, YLE, Lumiere, Kvikmyndamiðstöð Íslands, Nordisk Film and TV Fund, and MEDIA Creative Europe. The series also benefitted from the tourism, industry, and innovation ministry’s filming rebate scheme.
