Icelandair cancels lay-offs, but fewer than hoped
This news has been confirmed by Sigrún Össurardóttir from Icelandair’s communications department.
The move has been met with disappointment from the head of the association of Icelandic professional pilots, Jón Þór Þorvaldsson (pictured), in a letter to his members and reported in today’s Fréttablaðið. He would have liked to have seen Icelandair cancel more pilot redundancies.
The association disagrees with the airline’s stated reasoning for the number of re-hires. Calculations have shown the need for more pilots, Jón Þór writes. Calculations for pilot demand are based on the planned Icelandair schedule for August.
“In relation to the significant contribution of pilots in several areas in recent months, it was the hope of FÍA (the pilots’ association) that the calculations that showed both a need for more pilots and the economic benefits of cancelling terminations at the same time would take precedence, but that was not the case,” he wrote in his letter.
