Icelanders cast ballots today to elect their president for the next four years. Polls predict a comfortable victory for incumbent Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, but his challenger Guðmundur Franklín Jónsson predicts a close result.

Polling stations are open across Iceland between 09.00 and 22.00, with a few locally-advertised exceptions that open later or close earlier. People have also been able to vote for the past several weeks at district commissioners' offices, embassies and consulates overseas, and at the Smáralind shopping centre. More people than ever have already voted before polling day.

All Icelandic citizens resident in Iceland and over 18 years of age are eligible to vote. Icelandic citizens who moved to other countries on or after 1st December 2011 are also able to vote.

There will be live election coverage (in Icelandic) on RÚV TV between 22.00 and midnight tonight, with the first numbers expected shortly after polling stations close. RÚV English will also be covering the election results.

There is more information on the election in English here, and in Polish here.
