Fire engulfed a house in the Vesturbær neighbourhood of Reykjavík yesterday afternoon and firefighters remained at work until 03.30 this morning. Three people have died and two more are in intensive care.

The timber house on the corner of Bræðraborgastígur and Vesturgata was initially thought to be redeemable, but conditions were more difficult than the fire brigade first thought. The building, reportedly registered to an employment agency and used to house foreign workers, had up to ten people inside when the fire started. Some escaped by jumping from windows.

In addition to the three casualties and two in intensive care, one other person has been allowed to leave hospital and three people were arrested at the scene for not obeying police orders—one remains in custody and a decision will be taken today on whether police will ask a court to extend custody while the investigation continues.

Police started investigating the scene as soon as the fire was declared over at 03.30 this morning. The smoke from the fire blew across the city centre and on into the suburbs, causing a lot of discomfort in nearby streets. Neighbouring houses escaped the fire but are thought highly likely to have suffered smoke damage.
