Diligent locals may have spotted a submarine entering Reykjavík harbour this morning, but its presence was not a surprise to the authorities. Dynamic Mongoose, the NATO submarine training exercise, will be held every-other year in Iceland from now on. The annual exercise will alternate between Iceland and Norway.

Dynamic Mongoose 2020 will take place in Iceland between 29th June and 10th July and some of the vessels involved have already arrived. The exercise has taken place in Norway every year since 2012; with the exception of 2017, when it was also in Iceland.

A statement from the Icelandic foreign ministry says that NATO has now decided to alternate the annual training exercise between Iceland and Norway. Seven nations are taking part this year: Iceland, Canada, France, Germany, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Facilities in the secure zone of Keflavík International Airport will be used during the exercise, including the NATO control station there. The Icelandic coastguard will take part in the exercise, using its helicopters and patrol ships in the parts of the exercise that relate to its usual patrol duties.

According to the foreign ministry, the arrival of the military vessels has been arranged in cooperation with Icelandic health authorities and relevant coronavirus prevention measures have been put in place.
