The 67-year-old man pulled from a house fire in Akureyri on Tuesday evening died in intensive care in Reykjavík late on Wednesday, doctors have confirmed.

Fire fighters discovered the man unconscious on the middle floor of Hafnarstræti 37 in Akureyri as the house burned. He was transferred to Akureyri hospital and then flown to Reykjavík later the same evening.

Northeast Iceland police released a statement saying that the investigation into the cause of the fire is in its early stages. Forensics experts finished their on-site analysis on Wednesday and will further investigate several fields including electronic equipment in the house.

The fire brigade was called to the ruins of the house again yesterday morning after smoke was spotted. It had been believed to be fully extinguished at around midnight on Tuesday, but fire restarted on Thursday morning. It is likely some embers had remained hot and the stronger wind yesterday morning brought flames back to life. Fire fighters douse burnt buildings carefully to extinguish all embers, but it is nevertheless fairly common for fires to reignite. Yesterday’s operation was small in comparison to Tuesday’s.
